STEM Shelter Activity for Kids: Engineer a Shelter Against the Weather Challenge
🌴 Create space for you kids to practice critical thinking and engineering skills with this STEM Shelter Challenge!
🌴 Your kids will be given a problem, supplies, and several possible solutions. They’ll have to use their creativity to figure out what will work best!
🌴 Each scenario is introduced with a story about Andy the Poison Dart Frog. This immersive method will help kids visualize the problem and naturally workshop a solution.
🌴 There are 3 possible weather-related problems to solve: too sunny, too rainy, and too windy.
🌴 Once kids choose which weather type to rescue Andy from, they will sketch out a solution on their Recording Sheets.
🌴 Once they’ve got a design that works, they can put it into action with the resources available to them!

Ways to use this resource:
Use it with open-ended supplies. Although a restricted Supplies List is offered within the resource, you can choose for your kids to find their own supplies. This might mean gathering items from outside, walking around the house, or heading to the Dollar Store! The benefit with this method is that there’s no wrong answer. The sky’s the limit!
Turn this into a small group challenge. Since there are 3 weather-related problems, divide your family or co-op into 3 teams! Each team has to design a solution as quickly as possible OR design one that works the best. Have fun with this!
So what’s included?
-3 possible solutions to the problems through engineering
-Custom-designed Project Pieces
-Teacher and Student Guides on how to make the project
-Learning Pages introducing and developing the NGSS topics through an animal story
