How to Keep Your Kids Engaged During the Holiday Season 🐸

AHHHHH Can you believe it's November? I feel like I spend the entire month saying that and then all of a sudden, it's December!

Kids feel that energy too, and sometimes it can be tough to stay focused!

Don't worry, here's a free activity you can do to help them engage and enjoy learning through this holiday season.

GET THEM OUTSIDE WITH ART!

Use these FREE Art Element Sheets as an active scavenger hunt. Here's a break down of what you can do with each one.

🐝

1. LINE--Walk around school or home and look for basic lines. These could be in the bricks, tree branches, swings, or bird feathers!

2. TEXTURE--This ones is fun if you want to collect items from outside. Encourage them to find leaves, twigs, and acorns and either draw or glue them to the sheets. Hang on a bulletin board to bring the outside in.

🐌

3. SHAPE--A great way to apply the shapes you just went over in math is to go on a scavenger hunt for them. Give each student a recording sheet and tell them to find 9 unique shapes. Get them outside or at least looking out a window.

🐸

4. COLOR--My favorite! Tell them to look for the 6 colors of the rainbow outside, but then find 3 neutrals as well. They can even collect items to match with each color!

🐜

5. VALUE--Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. So break up the 9 blocks into 3-box sections. Tell students to find and draw 3 light items, 3 medium items, and 3 dark items.

TEXTURE EXAMPLE

Here’s a sneak peak of the Texture Practice Sheet used as a Nature Scavenger Hunt.

My son is 16 mos. old, but really this activity is perfect for ages 4-9!

  1. First, I wrote a few texture words over the boxes. I only did three as a way to get us started. We filled in the rest as we find textures outside!

  2. Second, I looked for the three texture words specifically. I should my son the items and had him feel them. Then we collected them in the basket.

  3. Third, we scoured the yard for different textures, exploring along the way and placing them in the basket.

  4. Last, once we had enough in the basket, we placed our favorites of different textures onto the worksheet.

  5. OPTIONAL: You could have older kids glue them down, draw them, or place underneath and rub a crayon on top to show the texture. The possibilities are endless!

I would LOVE for you to show off what you all did with your Art Practice Sheets! Post a comment below :)
