Element of Color Art Project: Easy, Step-by-step Guide
Here’s an easy, step-by-step art guide to make a hands-on art project with your 3-6 year olds.
They’ll love learning about the element of color (a fundamental of art) as well as growing in their cutting and pasting skills.

The Color Teal Art Project
Is anyone else’s favorite color teal?
Lili at Barefoot and Bilingual loves this color, so she put together a free teal clipart packet.
I love art projects about the element of color. The element of color is the study of reflected light that produces different hues, values, and intensities. We generally think of the colors of the rainbow as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Read more about the element of color here.
This art project helps young kids identify a color NOT on the rainbow, which helps their observation skills and color awareness. Teal is a combo of blue and green! In nature, you’ll see it most often at the ocean in tropical places.

🎨 AGES: 3-6. Look for the extension throughout for 7-9 year olds.

Here’s how you can use this for your kids!
Download this free clipart packet.
Place clipart into a word document (I used Google Docs).
Make sure the clipart is evenly spaced out. You want to be able to cut around each item easily.
3. Print out on paper.
Mine came out to 4 pieces of paper. The teal turned out so pretty!
4. Cut out/have your child cut out clipart pieces.
This will depend on your child’s skill level. To make it easier for little hands, cut the clipart into chunks of 3-4.
Did you notice the Spanish and French words for teal?
5. Glue to a piece of construction or printer paper.
EXTENSION: You could use heavy watercolor paper instead. This would give your kids the opportunity to add some pretty watercolor designs to it first. You could have them mix blues and greens until they got the best teal. Then, once it dries, have them continue with the art project.
6. Gather other things around your craft room to add.
These could be:
-sticky notes
-pieces of scrap paper
-crayons
-markers
-teal stickers
7. Have fun! Take your time creating layer after layer of this easy art project.
You can add more or less details depending on the skill of your child. For example, if your child is writing simple words, have them write a word near each item. If they’re more advanced than that, have them think of other items that are teal and write those down.
8. Display!
EXTENSION:
Keep this art project hanging up during the school year. Have kids refer to it if they get stuck when working on a creative writing project. They can use the images as prompts OR make up a silly story about one of the items.
